In detail... The companion of a woman with BUPA Travel Cover rang the hotline from an island in the Caribbean. The woman had developed a severe headache and had been vomiting and unable to eat for three days. Although drowsy the victim was able to describe her symptoms and based on this the team made an initial assessment that she had suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage (a bleed on the brain). Within two hours an air ambulance took her to neighbouring Trinidad which has the largest facility for neurosurgical assessment. After discussions between the medical team in the UK and in Trinidad it was agreed that the woman would benefit from transfer to a larger hospital in Florida. The transfer was arranged the same day and she was admitted to the U.S. hospital for a seven-hour operation. The woman made a full recovery and was flown home to the UK three weeks later.
