In detail... A family went to a European country on holiday by car with an E111 form, but without travel insurance. They were involved in a serious car accident resulting in the father being admitted to hospital with severe injuries. The two children were taken to different hospitals and after treatment were able to return to the UK with their mother, who had escaped injury. The father spent several weeks in hospital and eventually required an air ambulance to return him to the UK. The family thought that their E111 would cover their costs.
